Inspiring the preservation of a traditional art
On his latest visit to Sarawak, Jason Brooke brought back with him a unique collection of Ranee Margaret's 140-year-old Sarawak songket, kebaya and keringkam. The Ranee's love for Sarawak and its people is well known. She is credited with breaking down barriers by immersing herself in local culture, reflected here in her adopted manner of dress. It is quite a miracle such items have survived to be appreciated for their beauty, their skill, and the very special story they represent. The Trust intends to use this special collection to promote, encourage and inspire the traditional art of Sarawak weaving so that this art is not lost to future generations.
