On Christmas Day 1864 the young Tuan Muda (later second Rajah), Charles Brooke, celebrated with friends at Lingga near the mouth of the Batang Lupar. This watercolour of Lingga Fort was made by the artist Frederick Boyle when he visited earlier that year. When Jason Brooke visited Lingga in February of this year the flagpole seen here in the picture was still standing tall 152 years later.
